To quote from the IEEE Signal Processing Society Website, “Signal processing is at the heart of our modern world, powering today’s entertainment and tomorrow’s technology. It’s at the intersection of biotechnology and social interactions. It enhances our ability to communicate and share information. Signal processing is the science behind our digital lives.”

Today, the signals of interest can include sound, electromagnetic radiations, sensor, ultrasound, music, image, biomedical, transmission and many more. The ever-growing demand and advancements in the field of signal processing and intelligent systems have been instrumental in the genesis of Signal Processing and Systems Engineering (SPaSE) domain at PES University. The main objectives of the domain are to:

  • Offer curriculum that is comprehensive and up to date
  • Foster intramural/extramural research through collaborations with industry and academia.
  • Publish quality research articles and apply for patents in the field.

Under SPaSE there are three main focus areas:

  • Signal Processing and Machine Learning: Here, we work on implementing advanced signal processing and machine learning algorithms. These are applied in time series analysis, natural language processing, biomedical signal processing and music signal processing.
  • Computer Vision: An area where machine learning and deep learning techniques give computers the power to analyse visual input the way people do. Some of the applications we are working on include visual inspection and quality management in industries, healthcare applications like cancer and tumor detection, human protein analysis, bone abnormality detection and rehabilitation. Furthermore, research projects also include advanced driver-assistance systems, traffic flow and traffic violation detection and certain applications in the field of agriculture, business, sports and many more.
  • Control Systems and Artificial Intelligence: It is highly multidisciplinary. The focus is to design and develop systematic adaptive systems. Some of our researchers are working on applications in the field of humanoid robots, mobile robots, medical robotics, bots for fault detection and many more.

Department of ECE has well-equipped labs. Each domain is guided by a domain head and the research team comprises of members drawn from faculty of ECE, who are highly qualified with a very good exposure in the field of signal processing and systems engineering. The key research topics are selected taking into account, the expertise, state-of-the-art, societal impact and the potential industry support.
