Centre for Healthcare Engineering and Learning

Motivation

An interdisciplinary centre of excellence in healthcare technologies serves to foster innovation, research, and development in the field of Healthcare Engineering and Technology. It brings together experts from various disciplines including Medicine, Engineering, Computer science, and Data analytics to collaborate on projects aimed at advancing healthcare through technology. The Healthcare Engineering sector is evolving at a great pace, due to the advancements in software and medical devices.

Research Focus Areas

The focus of the centre is to utilise the state-of-the-art technologies in Signal Processing, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Instrumentation, IOT, and Cloud Systems to develop Intelligent Wearable/Assistive devices, Decision support systems, mHealth and to encourage healthcare research. The Centre will follow the prevailing ethical standards in biomedical research and engineering research. Some of the Research focus areas are briefed below:

Past projects

mHealth

mHealth (mobile health) is a rapidly evolving field that leverages mobile technology to improve healthcare outcomes, accessibility, and efficiency. Some of the applications which are in the interest of the centre are telemonitoring applications, enhancing access to mental health services through mobile platforms, especially in underserved areas, utilizing mobile technologies to increase uptake of preventive screenings, Teleconsultations, Mobile solutions for improving prenatal care and monitoring maternal health and etc.,

Decision Support Systems

A Decision support system sifts through and analyses massive amount of data, compiling comprehensive information that can be used to solve problems from the past history, predictive analysis and decision making. Centre focus is to develop solutions to collect & manage data, develop systems that assist healthcare providers in diagnosing conditions based on patient data and clinical guidelines, develop algorithms to provide evidence-based treatment options tailored to individual patient profiles and stratification.

Wearable Devices

Wearable devices in the medical domain represent a significant area of research, offering various avenues for exploration and innovation. Centre would focus on the design and development of applications such as monitoring systems, preventive health, rehabilitation and education.

Medical Informatics

Medical informatics is a field that combines medicine and computer science to improve healthcare. Healthcare data will be analysed to identify areas for improvement with respect to patient care, resource allocation, or reducing hospital readmissions. Centre aims to provide solutions through applications which help patients manage their medical records, track medication and connect with healthcare providers. A system to automatically analyse and summarize patient medical records for quicker access to crucial information.

Assistive Devices

Developing technologies that support individuals in their daily lives are assistive health care systems. Key areas of our research interest include intelligent prosthetics, smart home systems, human computer interaction systems to improve the usability of assistive technologies.
